G-Auto, India

The winner of the 2014 Grand MobiPrize was G-Auto! Many thanks to Takata and Ford Motor Company for sponsoring the prize! G-Auto has organized auto rickshaw drivers (who are a significant provider of informal transportation for the poor and middle class alike) to make auto rickshaws more environmentally sustainable, more beneficial to the overall transport system, and more socially and economically equitable for both the riders and the drivers. GAuto provides 24-7 safe, reliable and metered auto rickshaw service to commuters through on-call, online or mobile app booking. They aggregate, train, and professionalize auto drivers, helping them lead a better life with improved income and job satisfaction. The jury felt this model could also be a successful model for other cities/states in both the developing and developed world.

About G-Auto

G-Auto was conceived and developed by Mr Nirmal Kumar, a management graduate from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad. It is a concept wherein auto rickshaw drivers are organized under the social G-Auto umbrella brand to offer safe, reliable and metered auto rickshaw service to commuters.

Indeed G-Auto is endeavoring to solve the problems of RATS (Refusal, Accessibility, Transparency and Safety) for auto rickshaw users. On the other hand, its focus is to provide security, prosperity and dignity (Suraksha, Samridhhi and Samman called 3S of G-Auto) to auto rickshaw drivers and their families. G-Auto has a network of 15000 auto rickshaw drivers across Delhi, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Rajkot and Surat.

Passengers can get the service on call 24-7 by dialing G-Auto call centre or through our website or through free mobile applications. The passengers get G-Pilot’s mobile number, name and vehicle number details within a few minutes of booking. Passengers are charged Government meter fare and facility fee. The passenger is given a receipt against the payment.

Drivers benefited from a substantial increment in their income due to online and call center booking leads. They also get free personal accident and life insurance along with other benefits like training, educational allowance to their children, a uniform, etc. The project is a boon for commuters who need hassle free last mile and first mile connectivity. They have become complementary and supplementary transport service to public transit in the above mentioned Indian cities.

The trigger behind the G-Auto initiative was a bitter personal experience of Mr Nirmal Kumar with an auto rickshaw driver’s overcharging and rudeness at the gate of the business school where he was doing his MBA. He started the initiative by organizing 15 auto rickshaw drivers from the gate of IIM-A in 2008.  That grew to 1000 within a few months. It got formally inaugurated by the then chief minister of Gujarat and present prime minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi.
