Smart Freight Centre (SFC), a global NGO based in Amsterdam, is looking for a business-oriented professional with a passion to be part of a global team to advance green freight and logistics worldwide. The Industry Manager will build relationships with industry to drive the uptake of harmonized logistics carbon accounting and reporting and mobilize smart freight leadership for emissions reduction.



Smart Freight Centre (SFC) was established in 2013 as a global non-profit organization to make the global freight sector more efficient and environmentally sustainable. SFC is dedicated to remove market barriers and leverage existing initiatives to catalyze the uptake of practical solutions throughout industry.


SFC has three ambitions:

  • Drive industry leadership (“Smart Freight Leadership”) and take the development of effective green freight programs and initiatives to a global level by making a connection between them to maximize cooperation and alignment. This results in more effective programs that span the globe (with consistent methodologies, labels, technology information, etc.) and that companies with global supply chains are more likely to join.
  • Create a universal and transparent way of calculating logistics emissions across the global supply chain through the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) as a platform for industry initiatives, associations and multinationals. The GLEC Framework for Emissions Methodologies will be launched mid-2016 and taken to market to allow companies to more accurately report emissions, select more fuel efficient modes and carriers and identify other ways to increase efficiency.
  • Catalyze the sector-wide adoption of proven and cost-effective technologies and other measures starting with tires and fleet management through SFC’s Green Trucks China project. SFC develops solutions to barriers that carriers face, such as information on technologies, capacity of fleet managers or access to the right partners. Once demonstrated with a few carriers, these solutions can be taken to scale and replicated for other technologies and measures and taken to markets around the world.

SFC has positioned itself as a neutral and trusted organization with secured funding, independent from industry or government, and has a global network across stakeholder groups. They have developed practical solutions to barriers industry faces: the Smart Freight Leadership framework, the GLEC Framework for Emissions Methodologies, and solutions to allow carriers to adopt technologies and other measures. It is important to now focus on taking these solutions to market by involving more carriers, logistics service providers, shippers, technology suppliers, OEMs and other stakeholders. SFC is looking for an Industry Relations Manager to join its team to achieve this.



The Industry Relations Manager’s primary task will be to build relationships within the global freight industry to drive the uptake of the GLEC Framework for Logistics Emissions Methodologies and broader smart freight leadership practices to mobilize emissions reduction. He/she will be based at SFC’s head office in Amsterdam, work closely with the GLEC Director and report to the Executive Director. This is a unique opportunity for an industry manager with a strong focus on sustainability to promote solutions that work for business.



  • Develop and implement a route-to-market strategy for the GLEC Framework for Emissions Methodologies to realize industry-wide implementation and promote adoption from governmental agencies
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key industry players, especially multinational carriers, LSPs and shippers
  • Support the GLEC Director in the broader GLEC management, including organizing and attending GLEC meetings, developing case studies to apply the GLEC Framework within industry, overseeing technical consultants in the further development of the GLEC Framework, and contributing to communication and outreach
  • Develop and implement an approach to translate the Smart Freight Leadership framework into practice within industry
  • Advise on the engagement of industry players in the Green Trucks China program, working closely with SFC’s China Director
  • Support other SFC activities as needed. The ideal candidate will have the following characteristics:
  • Strong manager with demonstrated experience of working with the logistics sector, preferably in international settings
  • Results-driven manager with excellent ability to build relations, solve problems and communicate and present convincingly
  • Experience with practical logistics business decisions and projects, ideally linked to carbon emissions accounting and reduction efforts
  • Fluent in English and working knowledge of other languages is an advantage
  • Team player who is dedicated to be part of SFC’s mission to improve efficiency and reduce emissions from the global freight sector at scale.
